Romeu Runa at Piccadilly Gallery
On Tuesday 4 September, Belgian artist, Berlinde De Bruyckere will unveil two new works, including one of her first outdoor sculptures in Hauser & Wirth’s sixth project in Southwood Garden, St. James’s Church.
That same evening, Hauser & Wirth will host the book launch of ‘Romeu my deer’, the third in a trilogy of publications on De Bruyckere’s art.
To celebrate these two events, Hauser & Wirth will also host a special performance by Portuguese contemporary dancer Romeu Runa (Dancer with Les Ballets C de la B) in the main space of the Piccadilly gallery.
De Bruyckere’s outdoor sculpture will remain on view in Southwood Garden until December 2012.
Dance has played a prominent role in Berlinde’s work, following a serendipitous encounter with the renowned choreographer, Alain Platel, of Les Ballets C de la B. Platel introduced Berlinde to three dancers in his company – one of which was Runa – and De Bruyckere immediately began capturing the dancers’ athletic physiques and translating them into her contorted figures. In recent years, Runa has been a model and inspiration for De Bruyckere, lending his name to several important sculptures and drawings, as well as the new publication, ‘Romeu my deer‘.
