Dance Umbrella 2012

For over 30 years Dance Umbrella has been bringing cutting edge contemporary dance to London, growing into a huge festival running for several weeks across various venues. This year, it’s off in a new direction, with ten packed days (5 – 14 October) of performances, video installations, talks and a photography exhibition, all taking place in just one venue – the new the state-of-the art centre for performing arts in the University of the Arts brand new campus at King’s Cross.

Choreographer Jonathan Burrows, a hugely influential figure in the development of contemporary dance, joins the team as a guest this year, co-curating the programme with Betsy Gregory – Dance Umbrella’s Artistic Director. She says: “We are going back to our roots, to discover fresh ideas, and to interpret global trends and cross currents in dance and performance today for London audiences. There is no doubt that collaboration between artists, working in different media, is opening up new opportunities, giving a completely new perspective on dance.”

The full list of artists is: Fabian Barba (Ecuador), Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion (UK), Ivo Dimchev (Bulgaria), Becky Edmunds and Lucy Cash (UK), Siobhan Davies and David Hinton (UK), Mette Edvardsen (Norway), Tim Etchells (UK), Philipp Gehmacher (Austria), Beth Gill (USA), Thomas Hauert (Switzerland) and Scott Heron (USA), Wendy Houstoun (UK), Rudi Laermans (Belgium), Rosemary Lee (UK), Hetain Patel (UK), Noé Soulier (France), Sudermann and Söderberg (Germany/Sweden) and Andros Zins-Browne (USA).
