Dancer Paul Liburd and choreographer Nina Rajarani were both awarded MBEs in the recent round…
Paul Liburd has been a soloist with Scottish Ballet since 2004. He danced with Rambert Dance Company from 1992 onwards and previously with London Contemporary Dance Theatre. In January 2005 he received the Dance Critics’ Circle award for Best Male Dancer (Contemporary). He said: Paul said, “I am delighted to receive the MBE for Services to Dance. Dancing and performing play such an important role in my life, so I am very touched that my work with Scottish Ballet, Rambert, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and throughout my career has been recognised in this way, and I am extremely proud to accept this honour.”
Nina Rajarani runs a thriving school of dance based at the Harrow Arts Centre, Middlesex as well as her own performance company, Srishti. She won The Place Prize in 2006 with Quick! - which she has since developed into a new work Quiet, Please! She is currently an Associate Artist of Akademi, the South Asian Dance agency. Talking about receiving the award, which is specifically in honour of her services to South Asian Dance, she said: “I am greatly honoured. This has made the many sacrifices over all the years feel worthwhile.”
