History
The redevelopment of the Royal Opera House on its 2.5-acre site has brought a range of benefits for audiences, performers, people who live and work in Covent Garden and visitors to the area.

The work embraced:
The renovation of the original 1858 Grade 1 listed building, including the auditorium and the original foyers; The restoration of the main part of the 19th Century Floral Hall, the roof of which was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and its incorporation into the main theatre building as the new main audience circulation space;
The construction of the new building, which houses additional public areas, new rehearsal studios for The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera, and new, efficient storage and handling mechanisms for scenery.

When the theatre re-opened the auditorium had been re-raked, re-seated, re-painted, re-gilded and re-lit, but is still immediately recognisable as the same “House” that the audience has known as the home of The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.
