The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) is a registered Scottish charity (SC 016085), dedicated to promoting Scottish country dance. It has a world-wide network of “branches” and affiliated groups, with an office in Edinburgh. Members form branches, and these branches run classes (particularly for beginners) and social events for their members and the general public in their particular area. The Society organises national and international events on a regular basis and runs schools in Scotland and elsewhere to bring Scottish dancing within the reach of anyone and everyone, whatever their age or ability.

The London Branch was the first to be formed outside Scotland and is one of the largest branches with around 800 members. They hold classes for both adults and young people, dances and workshops throughout the year and have an annual Day School for dancers and musicians in October. Most of the dances take place at St Columba’s Church Hall, Pont St. There is a quarterly magazine called “The Reel” which has an ever-growing readership and RSCDS have a Branch bookstall and a website which provides information on all their activities and contains a dance diary of events in the south-east of England. The prize-winning demonstration team gives displays of Scottish Dance at events throughout the south-east. During the 2005 season RSCDS London celebrated their 75th anniversary with a series of special dances and events.

Whether you’re new to dancing, a ballet dancer looking for a new challenge, a highland dancer wanting a more sociable pastime, or just looking for a friendly way to get back in trim, RSCDS can help. The London branch will have an RSCDS certified teacher who can take you through the basic building blocks and beyond.
There are many classes, at all levels, and a great variety of social dances. And all RSCDS certified teachers have passed a stringent series of training courses
so you will be assured of quality teaching.

For members wishing to improve their technique there are workshops and day schools as well as the Society’s own Schools – Summer School in St Andrews, Scotland and Winter School in Pitlochry, Scotland. Members from every corner of the world meet at these Schools to immerse themselves in the Scottish country dancing experience.

You don’t have to be a Scot to find your foot tapping to the irresistible rhythms of the stirring reels and haunting strathspeys. RSCDS have members all around
the world ready to welcome you to their classes and events. Today’s Scottish Country Dances continue the tradition of social gatherings for the whole community.
