Joe Bates, Independent Arts Manager

Joe is an Independent Arts Manager based in London.
He originally trained as a dancer at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, gaining a first class BA Honours Degree in Performing Arts (Dance), going onto study at London Contemporary Dance School. As well as performing and teaching, Joe has worked as a production/stage manager for both dance and theatre. In 2007, he completed a Masters Degree in Arts Management, specialising in dance education and training, at City University, London.
Joe previously worked as Company Administrator for EDge, The Postgraduate Performance Company of London Contemporary Dance School, and then went on to work as a freelance Associate Manager with Gwen Van Spijk @ CUE for a range of projects and clients including: Ricochet Dance Productions (move-me.com), Darkin Ensemble, Wired Aerial Theatre and Bedlam Dance Company.
In 2008 Joe joined forces with fellow IDMN member Claire Morton and together they trade as Morton Bates Arts Services. They currently work with a range of clients including: New Art Club; mapdance – the postgraduate performance company at University of Chichester; Laïla Diallo/Sense of Self ; Jeanefer Jean-Charles/Lads and Dads Move!; Katie Green/green bean dance; Heather Eddington/State of Flux; Yael Flexer & Nic Sandiland/Dance & Digital Works; Richard Alston Dance Company; Niki McCretton; Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company; Claire Cunningham & Jose Agudo. Other projects have included work with EDge – The Postgraduate Performance Company of London Contemporary Dance School, Lost Dog, Bottlefed Ensemble, Zoi Dimitriou, Green Box Productions and The Keats-Shelley Association. He currently sits on the Executive Committee for the Independent Dance Managers’ Network.
