Shizuka Hariu is a set and lighting designer based in London and Brussels. She is also co-director of SHSH Architecture+Scenography. She has over 10 years of experience working as a theatre designer in various dance, opera and theatre productions. She has collaborated with many exciting choreographers throughout her career.

Her designs are internationally recognised and have received glowing reviews, such as Akram Khan and Sylvie Guillem’s Sacred Monsters in Sadler’s Wells, La Monnaie Opera House, Sydney Opera House and many other worldwide venues. Her most recent work Cloud/Crowd was performed in New National Theatre Tokyo.

Her unique designs draw from her practice in both architecture and set design. Her set designs allow audiences to experience the imaginary and concrete within space and time. She constantly invents new ways to present her designs in harmony with varied choreography.

Review extracts

“A striking white stage backed by two huge, curving icebergs (designed by Shizuka Hariu)”David Dougill, Sunday Times

“Every spectator receives wireless headphones and can walk freely in an environment. Scenographer Shizuka Hariu created a surprising space with a screen of vertically suspended bamboo sticks.”Jeroen Peeters, De Morgen
