Introduction

Directed by Mayuri Boonham, ATMA Dance is a vibrant dance company that presents inspirational contemporary work using classical Bharata Natyam movement vocabulary to create an eloquent, unpredictable dance aesthetic. By pushing a traditional form into new conceptual territories, the company’s work reflects the meeting of ancient Indian thought with contemporary experience.

Within one year of the company’s formation in 2009, ATMA Dance produced two new touring works, Sivaloka and Ghatam, both of which toured nationally and internationally and were nominated for the London Fringe Festival award in 2011. For the creation of soundtrack for Sivaloka, Mayuri was granted rare permission by the Archaeological Survey of India to work on location within the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to record music with India’s leading Electronica composers MIDIval PunditZ. This work was supported by Arts Council England, British Council India along with co-commissions from GemArts, Art Asia and production support from Pavilion Dance South West.
