News: Youth Dance England Conference

Wednesday 18 August 2010

Ed Vaizey, Minister for Communication, Culture and the Creative Industries, is the latest speaker to join the line up at the country’s leading conference on youth dance in September. A member of the All Party Parliamentary Dance Group, Vaizey has been a consistently strong advocate for dance and it is anticipated he will be able to give some insights on the future of culture and youth dance under the coalition government.

The two day conference takes place on 23 & 24 September at the Mermaid Conference and Events Centre, London. Other speakers include Michael Day, Executive Director for Training of the Teaching and Development Agency and Professor Joan White, Director of Education at the Royal Academy of Dance who will talk about workforce development for dance teachers in schools; Lord Tony Hall, CEO of Royal Opera House; Wayne McGregor, Royal Ballet resident choreographer and Youth Dance Champion; Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England and choreographer Richard Alston.

The event will focus on the future of youth dance and dance education in England and will see the unveiling of three major developments for the arts, dance and education sectors:

• The launch of the Ten Year Vision for children and young people’s dance – outlining how dance in and beyond schools should be developed nationally by 2020. The Vision has been written by the dance, education and sports sectors, addressing current and future issues in dance participation, teaching, workforce development and careers

• Dance in and Beyond Schools – the first national resource for teaching dance to be produced since 1993 and distributed to every school in England

• The launch of a new nationally recognised professional qualification – Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (Children and Young People), which is set to benchmark teaching standards for dance practitioners, with the potential to change the way dance is taught.

Linda Jasper, Director of Youth Dance England said: “We are thrilled to have Ed Vaizey at the conference, especially at such important time for the development culture in this country. Having Michael Day and Professor Joan White join our event adds even more impetus to our drive to champion youth dance. We are thrilled they are supporting us, our partners and the opportunities and futures of young people in England today.”

YDE Conference 2010 – A Shared Vision for the Future, runs from 10.30am – 6.45pm on 23 September and 9am – 4.30pm on 24 September at the Mermaid Conference and Events Centre, London.
