News: World's first Bollywood dance syllabus

Tuesday 29 September 2009

Honey Kalaria is opening the doors of her academy for the new term, from 21 September 2009. Fresh from the BBC Proms and Indian Voices Day – where Honey choreographed students from Honey’s Dance Academy for their performance alongside Shaan – Honey is continuing her campaign to make Bollywood accessible to all.

Honey’s Dance Academy (HDA) provides Bollywood dance training to students of all ages. The academy is also introducing the world’s first Bollywood dance syllabus, available exclusively at HDA from September onwards.

The syllabus, devised by Honey herself, has been accepted by the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing and Kindred Arts (UKA), allowing students to take fully accredited professional Bollywood dance exams. The first exams will take place at the academy in December, at the end of the twelve week term, where students will be assessed by UKA external examiners and Honey hopes that further dance institutions around the country will follow suit.

“It’s very exciting to see the syllabus being used. The aim of it is really to establish, maintain and monitor standards within Bollywood and Indian Performing arts, offering central guidelines to institutions for classes and giving students goals to work towards. We also hope to help students build their confidence, self-esteem and career prospects with the international entertainment industry,”
comments Honey Kalaria.

The academy is also actively looking for new talent of all ages to train, promote and manage. Previous alumni have gone on to perform in films, theatre and television including Harry Potter, Blue Peter and Gurinder Chadha’s much anticipated film, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife.
