News: Wayne McGregor|Random Dance open class

Monday 23 August 2010

During the creation period for Wayne McGregor | Random Dance’s new work FAR – which premieres at Sadler’s Wells in November, the company are opening up their classes to non company members.

Jasmine Wilson, the company’s co Director of Creative Learning said: “During our residency at Jerwood we wanted to provide opportunities for as many people as possible to become involved in the work, through a range of classes. It is the first time we have opened up our daily company class and we are hoping that it will provide a valuable experience for those attending but also it is interesting for our company dancers to be joined by a range of professionals from outside the company.”
The classes will take place between 13 September – 29 October at The Jerwood Space and there are three different opportunities to take part.
The daily morning class is open to professional dancers, graduates, or students in vocational training with a high technical ability. The fee will be £35 per week.
There will also be two intensive weekend Labs in September and October – open to students during their training, or recent graduates from University and Vocational courses, from both classical and contemporary backgrounds. Each weekend will be £100 – or £175 for both.

The adult open class, which will take place on Wednesday evenings, is open to anyone aged 18 or over – and no previous dance experience is necessary. Jasmine Wilson explains: “we are following up on the great experience we had during our Big Dance project at Cecil Sharp House in July. Working with a group of adults of diverse age and experience gave us an appetite for working with this type of group. Each session will include a dynamic warm up class followed by a series of creative tasks that reflect the way Wayne works in the studio with his dancers. We are not looking for technical dance ability – we are keen to work with people who have an appetite and curiosity for our style of work and for exploring their own creative potential.”
The class will be led by Odette Hughes, Associate Director and Antoine Vereecken, former company dancer. Sessions are ‘drop in’ and cost £5 each; with a reduced price of £28 for all 7 sessions.
