News: V&A's new Theatre Galleries

Friday 13 March 2009

Following the closure of the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden in 2007, the Victoria & Albert Museum unveiled the rehoused and refreshed collection in their Theatre and Performance Galleries on 18 March 2009.

Charlotte Cripps gets a sneak preview “There’s an impractical but beautiful tutu, designed for Balanchine’s Bugaku, worn by the choreographer’s muse, the ballerina Suzanne Farrell, with overlapping chrysanthemum petals that make it impossible for the dancer to see her feet.” Independent, 11 March.09

In anticipation of the opening of the Theatre and Performance Galleries Darcey Bussell and other leading figures in the entertainment world, talk about their favourite exhibit. The tutu worn by Margot Fonteyn in Swan Lake, Vienna Ballet, 1964, is Bussell’s choice “I’ve seen a lot of very brilliant footage of Margot doing Swan Lake and she did make it look the most graceful thing in the world.” Nancy Durrant, Times, 10 March.09
