News: The Best of British

In Olympic year, British Dance Edition comes to London. The biennial event which showcases the best of British dance to the rest of the world takes place from 2 – 5 February at the main dance presenting venues across the city: Greenwich Dance, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the Royal Opera House, Sadler’s Wells, Southbank Centre, Stratford Circus and The Place – who are co-producing the event together with Dance Umbrella.

This year the number of delegates will be limited to 300, with booking priority given to programmers. At British Dance Edition 2010, held in Birmingham, research showed UK promoters attending had a combined programming budget in excess of £6million – with international promoters’ budgets in excess of £19million.

The first group of companies who have been selected to show their work have just been announced. The programme includes: a new work by Akram Khan performed by Aakash Odedra; Michael Clark Company with an extract of Come, Been and Gone; Lost Dog, performing their Place Prize-winning It Needs Horses; Hofesh Shechter Company with The Art of Not Looking Back; Wayne McGregor | Random Dance presenting an extract of FAR; Luca Silvestrini’s Protein with LOL (lots of love) ;_ Richard Alston Dance Company with Unfinished Business and Russell Maliphant Company, with a new dance piece, The Rodin Project, (working title) inspired by the works of the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

There will be events and sessions open to non-delegates at British Dance Edition 2012 , including three public performances: a triple bill of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Candoco Dance Company and Hofesh Shechter Company at Sadler’s Wells (Thu 2 Feb); National Dance Company Wales and Richard Alston Dance Company at Southbank Centre (Sat 4 Feb), and Russell Maliphant Company at Sadler’s Wells (Sun 5 Feb).
