Spring Loaded returned to The Place at the weekend with seventeen evenings of dance and performance from newer artists making work outside the norm. The season kicked off on Friday with Eva Recacha’s Easy Rider, and continues tomorrow with contempoary hip hop dance theatre from Southpaw Dance Company.

The artists programmed in Spring Loaded “come from all different places and backgrounds,” says Director of The Place Theatre Eddie Nixon. “The season is loaded with new ideas from people who are really trying to do things differently.” Some names will be familiar – the dancers of Hofesh Shechter Company present another edition of In Good Company, the choreographic platform for Shechter’s company members where the dancers become creators. Others may be less well-known to a UK audience, such as performance artist Mamoru Iriguchi (a Place Prize finalist in 2012), who brings a quirky triple bill of pieces to The Place.

To encourage audiences to step outside their comfort zones and try something new, The Place is offering a special “Explorer” ticket offer when you book two shows together. If you book for a second show in the season, your second ticket will be half-price (valid for Spring Loaded shows only, tickets must be booked in the same transaction). Tickets are otherwise £15 (£12 concessions), except for the final show on 14 June which is priced at £9 (£6 concs).

Playful, physical or plain perplexing, Spring Loaded has a variety of works from across the performance spectrum. “What I can say for sure is that no two shows are going to look the same,” says Nixon, “but they will all reveal an attitude towards the world we’re living in from people who’ve plenty to say about it.”

Spring Loaded 2014 runs from 25 April – 14 June 2014
