News: South Bank Sky Arts Awards nominations anounced

Nominations for this year’s South Bank Sky Arts Awards, the only awards ceremony to to celebrate the UK’s achievements across all genres of the arts, were annouced today.

In the dance category the nominees are Wayne McGregor | Random Dance for Atomos; Mark Bruce Company for Dracula and English National Ballet for Le Corsaire ,

Choreographer/dancer Alexander Whitley [pictured above] is one of the Times Breakthrough Award nominees. An Affiliate Choreographer with the Royal Ballet, a New Wave associate artist at Sadler’s Wells and soon to be an associate choreographer at Rambert, Alexander has danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Michael Clark, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance – amongst others. He is a founder member of New Movement Collective.

The awards will be announced at an event on Monday 27 January at the Dorchester Hotel in London – with South Bank show presenter/producer Melyvn Bragg as master of ceremonies. “Once again, the list of nominees for the South Bank Sky Arts Awards shows that the UK arts landscape is as vibrant as ever,” he said. “It’s vital to honour the excellence of artists, performers, musicians and authors especially at this time, and were very glad that we can do this.”

The award itself will be designed by legendary pop artist Peter Blake – who famously co-created the album sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The awards will be broadcast on Sky Arts 1 on Thursday 30 January 2014 at 9.30pm.
