News: South Bank Show Awards

Friday 27 January 2006

The 10th Anniversary South Bank Show Awards were held on Friday 27 January at the Savoy Hotel in London, honouring some of the UK’s most creative and popular artists of 2005.

Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant won the Dance Category for Push – premiered at Sadler’s Wells last Autumn. They were presented with their award by Darcy Bussell. The other nominees were Ashley Page, for his work with Scottish Ballet and Matthew Bourne for Edward Scissorhands.

The awards, hosted by the series editor and presenter Melvyn Bragg, are still unique after ten years in that they span the whole range of the arts in Britain.

There are ten categories; Theatre, Film, Dance, Classical Music, Pop Music, Opera, Literature, Comedy, Visual Arts and TV Drama. Guests at the event included Helen Mirren, Tracey Emin, Ewan McGregor, PD James, Rob Brydon, Darcey Bussell, Ian McKellen and Will Young.

The nominations for the 10th Anniversary reflected an exceptionally rich year in the arts, with Wallace and Gromit, Peep Show, Billie Piper and Richard Attenborough among this year’s winners.

The awards ceremony was screened on ITV on Sunday 29 Jan at 11.05pm
