News: South Bank Show Awards 2005

Nominations for the South Bank Show awards have just been announced. This year’s Dance category is dominated by contemporary productions rather than classical ballet:

Akram Khan for ‘Ma’ premiered in the UK at the Edinburgh Festival and seen recently at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London

Phoenix Dance at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, under new Artistic Director Darshan Singh Bhuller.

Wayne Mcgregor for Ataxia with his company Random Dance, premiered at Sadler’s Wells.

Royal Ballet dancer Lauren Cuthbertson is included in nominees across a range of art forms for The Times Breakthrough Award.

The decibel award, presented in association with Arts Council England, recognising work that contributes to the development and promotion of the black and Asian arts sector, will be announced on the day.

The awards take place on Thursday 27th January 2005, at the Savoy Hotel., Started by the South Bank Show series editor and presenter Melvyn Bragg, the awards are unique in that they span the whole range of the arts in Britain. There are ten categories, covering Theatre, Film, Dance, Classical Music, Pop Music, Opera, Literature, Comedy, Visual Arts and TV Drama.
