News: Sadler’s Wells goes State side

Monday 31 July 2006

Innovative new dance productions made in London and New York will now be seen in both cities – as a result of an exciting new partnership between Sadler’s Wells and New York City Centre. Both venues already have established reputations for presenting world class dance from around the world – now cutting edge acclaimed new work will also be able to reach transatlantic audiences.

The collaboration begins with PUSH, featuring internationally celebrated ballerina and dance superstar Sylvie Guillem and acclaimed choreographer and dancer Russell Maliphant. The Olivier Award-winning show produced by Sadler’s Wells in September 2005 makes its US debut at New York City Center from 11 – 15 October, 2006.

Sadler’s Wells Resident Company Random and Associate Company George Piper Dances (AKA the Ballet Boyz) will also be appearing in the New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival which runs from 28 September to 8 October. In Spring 2007, a London version of Fall For Dance make will make its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells. Like its New York counterpart, the Sadler’s Wells festival will feature a wide variety of styles in one evening, and will introduce London audiences to a host of New York-based companies at accessible prices.

Alistair Spalding, Artistic Director of the London venue said, “Sadler’s Wells has a long history of taking its work to New York ever since the Sadler’s Wells Ballet first visited with Margot Fonteyn in 1949. Now that Sadler’s Wells is a producing house once again, it is fantastic to be able to bring the kind of work we are doing now to City Center as well as bringing exciting projects from New York City Center to the home of dance in London – Sadler’s Wells.”

The landmark not-for-profit New York City Center was founded in the 1940’s as Manhattan’s first performing arts center, and is now the annual New York City home to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre’s fall season, Paul Taylor Dance Company and Manhattan Theatre Club. New York City Center is host to some of America’s – and the world’s – most acclaimed performers and productions, and the producer of the Tony-honored *Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert* series, as well as the annual Fall for Dance Festival.

President and Chief Executive Arlene Shuler said: “New York City Center and Sadler’s Wells have distinguished histories of presenting both renowned and young choreographers and dance companies. This exchange will enable us to develop new projects involving artists from both countries. We are thrilled to introduce PUSH to New York audiences after its sell out run at Sadler’s Wells, and to bring the artistry of Sylvie Guillem to City Center, an historic home for dance in New York City”

The American Friends of Sadler’s Wells have provided generous support for this new partnership.
