From Sergei Polunin’s sensationally popular video for Hozier to big profile dance collaborations from Radiohead to Sia, pop videos are having a bit of a love affair with ballet at the moment.

Wayne McGregor embraces the blending lines of of the artforms, seen to full effect in his recent production Tree of Codes, a contemporary ballet scored by popular composer Jamie XX. McGregor says ‘it hasn’t always been easy to get artistic directors to embrace contemporary ideas, but he senses that attitudes are changing at grand lyric ballet theatres, such as the Royal Opera House in London, home to the Royal Ballet.’

“Opera houses are trying to make the experience more accessible,” he says. “They’re willing to engage with a more diverse musical palate, because they want the audience.”
