News: Pina remembered

The funeral of Pina Bausch took place quietly in Wuppertal about a week after her death. Only family, close friends and members of her company were present. There will be a public memorial service in Wuppertal early September – the date has not been confirmed yet.

Alistair Spalding, Artistic Director of Sadler’s Wells, where Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal usually performed in London, reflects on her place in dance history – and the reasons why her work wasn’t fully appreciated in the UK.

“The bottom line is that what can be broadly described as European-based dance theatre has always struggled to find acceptance in the UK, the critics pre­ferring on the whole the less controversial minimalism of the Americans.”
