News: Pina Bausch returns to London next year

Friday 9 November 2007

For this visit, Tanztheater Wuppertal are bringing a double bill of seminal works from the early stages of Bausch’s repertoire – Café Müller (1978) is set to fragments of haunting Purcell music and is a profoundly personal piece, inspired by the young Pina watching adults interact in her father’s café. It is one of only two works that Bausch – now aged 67 – continues to dance in herself.

*The Rite of Spring* is Bausch’s adaptation of Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Created in 1975, Bausch’s work sees the performers’ ritualistic dance bring them to near exhaustion, on a stage filled with earth.

One of Bausch’s long term dancers, Nazareth Panadero, tells Nadine Meisner she still discovers more about herself and the other dancers:

“And even today, I have not stopped experiencing this. Pina draws so much inspiration from her dancers. She takes you as a whole person, and you never know what she will bring to light, what you are capable of. With each new work, you start afresh.” Read more in the Sunday Times, 4 Nov, 07
