Last year the Outstanding Achievement in Dance was controversial in its lack of nominated dancers. This year’s contains three worthy contenders ( Edward Watson, Sylvie Guillem and Tommy Franzen ) alongside the equally deserving design team for the Royal Ballet’s blockbusting Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland .
Franzen is nominated in both dance categories – in Outstanding Achievement for his performances in Zoonation’s hit show Some Like it Hip Hop (Peacock Theatre) and in Best New Dance Production for his role as one of the choreographers of the show, alongside Kate Prince and Carrie-Anne Ingrouille . Authur Pita’s ROH2 production The Metamorphosis (Linbury Studio Theatre, ROH) also features in both, with Edward Watson’s performance nominated for the Outstanding Achievement award.
Matilda the Musical has been nominated in the maximum number of categories for a musical – including Best Theatre Choreographer ( Peter Darling ). It competes against, amongst others, Adam Cooper’s new production of Singin’ in the Rain, which is also nominated in several categories, including Best Musical Revival.
