News: No Eternal Damnation on BBC4

Friday 27 November 2009

The BBC has announced that it won’t be broadcast Javier De Frutos’ contribution to the ‘In the Spirit of Diaghilev’ programme filmed earlier this year at Sadler’s Wells.

In celebration of the centenary of the formation of the revolutionary Ballet Russes by Serge Diaghilev, Sadler’s Wells commissioned four of today’s most influential choreographers to make work in response to the anniversary, rather than looking to the past to mark the occasion. In the spirit of Diaghilev, Javier De Frutos’ contribution has been controversial. *Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez* features a fictional pope raping and abusing altar boys and the garrotting of a pregnant nun.

A BBC spokesperson said: “When we announced we were showing it, at the time we weren’t fully aware of the details of the ballet and had every intention of showing all four acts. Basically, the material isn’t suitable for a pre-watershed broadcast.”

The remaining components of *In the Spirit of Diaghilev* _ – Wayne McGregor’s _*Dyad 1909*, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s *Faun* _and Russell Maliphant’s _*After Light* will still be shown on BBC4 on 18 December, time to be confirmed.
