News: New leader for South East Dance

Monday 10 November 2008

Jamie Watton will be taking up the role of Chief Executive/Artistic Director at South East Dance in January 2009. He said_:_ “I am delighted to be joining South East Dance. The South East attracts, and is home to some exceptional artists. It has a strong network of organisations committed to presenting dance, in addition to audiences that are hungry to see and take part in great dance work. South East Dance has a vital role to play and I look forward to working with partners within and beyond the region to ensure that dance in the South East, and across England, continues to flourish.”

He succeeds Mairead Turner who has done much in the last four years to raise the profile and reputation of dance in the region – with particular emphasis on screen dance and community dance.

Sally Abbott, Director of Arts, Arts Council England, South East welcomed the appointment and added “South East Dance is fast becoming a flagship arts organisation in the region. Arts Council England has recognised this by offering a significant uplift in funds to help them build on successes and achievements of recent years. This new phase offers great potential to continue this good work and we wish them all the best.”

Jasmin Vardimon’s company is based in Brighton and Hofesh Shechter is just about to start a three year residency at Brighton Dome. It starts with performances of In Your Rooms and Uprising in November. Whilst his company are based there, they will research and develop new works, present several pieces, including a new commission and a major education project, as part of Brighton Festival 2009. They will also premiere a new full-length work there in May 2010.
