Dance South West, the regional strategic agency for dance, is joining forces with Bournemouth Borough Council to create and run a multi-million pound state-of-the-art Dance Centre at the Pavilion in Bournemouth.

The old Pavilion building has the largest ballroom in the South of England and an auditorium which seats nearly 1,500. Both are being refurbished and a new 190 seat studio theatre and dance studios – for professional and public use – will be built in to The Pavilion Dance Centre, which is due to open in 2010.

Kate Castle, Director of Dance South West, who will be running the Pavilion Dance Centre in partnership with the local authority said: “The Pavilion development will provide a wonderful space for dance on every level – professional performance, community practice and taking part – and to explore the relationship between each of these. We have some very talented people working in dance in the South West and we want to create a centre of excellence that acts as both a beacon and a magnet.”

Bournemouth Borough Council is investing over £3million in the refurbishment and will also support the dance centre with revenue funding. Council Leader Stephen MacLoughlin said: “The proposed Dance Centre is just the type of initiative that Bournemouth needs and it fits with our aspiration to refurbish the Pavilion into a 21st century arts and entertainment facility. The Council has now established a new Arts and Culture Board to increase the range and quality of culture, arts and entertainment. It is made up of key local organisations including Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Dance South West.
