News: New Chair for IDMN

Thursday 28 October 2010

Joe Bates is to be the new Chair of the Independent Dance Managers Network, succeeding Gwen Van Spijk who has led the group for the last five years. He says: “I am really excited about driving the network forward over the coming months. In this time of economic uncertainty, I feel that the network is a strong position, as its members continue to support and develop the infrastructure of the industry in a truly sustainable and creative way. As a group of individuals the network is changing, with its members working in much wider contexts than ever before. This brings with it a new breadth of knowledge and experience, which I am sure the network will draw upon during this time of fiscal change, in order to ensure artistic talent and creativity are supported into the future.”

IDMN is a forum for managers working in the independent dance sector. It provides networking and training opportunities and acts as a focal point for the distribution of relevant information and events. Previously membership was only open to freelance independents but the IDMN now has a new corporate strand for professionals employed by agencies specifically to support independent artists’ development, such as Creative Producers and people in Artist Development posts.

After training in dance at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Joe has worked as a performer and teacher, as well as in stage management in dance and theatre. He now runs Morton Bates Arts Services with fellow arts manager Claire Morton (who is taking on the role of Secretary on the Executive Committee of IDMN). They offer a range of services from project management, tour-coordination, education co-ordination and tour booking, to marketing and consultancy.

Gwen Van Spijk will stay on the IDMN Executive Committee, along with Tim Tubbs, June Gamble and Tia Hassan.
