News: New Artistic Director[s]

After an extensive and competitive search for a new Artistic Director, Candoco Dance Company has appointed Stine Nilsen and Pedro Machado to succeed founder Celeste Dandeker in a jobshare.

Stineand Pedrohave danced with CandoCo for seven and nine years respectively. They said: “We are both thrilled to be appointed as Artistic Directors of this wonderful company and honoured to be taking on the legacy created by Celeste. Her creative direction and inspirational leadership has attracted a remarkably talented company of dancers and committed staff and we are looking forward to working with them all. Celeste’s vision and determination over the past 16 years has created a tradition of excellence that we wish to build on as we develop the Company’s exciting repertory programme.”

Celeste Dandeker said that she was delighted with the appointment:“They bring with them a real understanding of the company ethos and the experience of being part of CandoCo as performers and teachers for a number of years. Their enthusiasm, commitment and vision will no doubt take CandoCo forward to new horizons. I sincerely wish them both a very happy and successful time as Artistic Directors of a wonderful company.”

Chair of the CandoCo Board of Directors Valerie Nott commented, “CandoCo has a long tradition of supporting the development of its artists, and the appointment of Stine and Pedro as Artistic Directors is testament to this nurturing approach. Stine Nilsen and Pedro Machado take up their post in October this year.

Candoco is currently in rehearsal with a new production, featuring a collaboration between choreographer Rafael Bonachela and music legend Scott Walker and choreographer and opera collaborator Arthur Pita. They are about to start a tour, at Manchester’s Contact Theatre on 26 April before heading to Europe for the summer, returning to the UK in September for dates across the country, including September 25/26 at the QEH in London.
