News: David Makhateli bows out

David Makhateli has left The Royal Ballet, which he joined in 2002/3 and where he has been a Principal Dancer since 2007.
Last season he danced the principal roles in Onegin, Sylvia, Cinderella and Manon for The Royal Ballet but hasn’t performed on the Royal Opera House main stage since June 2011. He has now left Covent Garden to pursue a portfolio career, both continuing to dance as a freelance guest artist around the world and to pursue other dance-related activities.

Born in Georgia, the son of professional ballet dancers (his grandfather was also a dancer), Makhateli graduated from The Royal Ballet School. Before joining The Royal Ballet in 2003, he danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and as a Principal Dancer with Houston Ballet.

Alongside his career at the Royal Ballet, in recent years Makhateli has been involved in dance event organization and production. He has now become a founding partner of D&D (Dance & Dancers) Arts Productions, which will be involved in promoting new talent, producing ballet and dance events and representing artists.

His next performance will be in the Anna Pavlova Gala at the London Coliseum this Sunday (4 March), where he will partner the Mariinsky Principal Ballerina, Alina Somova in the 2nd Act pas de deux from Giselle , shortly after which he will appear as a guest with the State Ballet of Georgia in Tbilisi before performing as a Guest Principal with Ballet Manila in the Philippines.

During his career at The Royal Ballet, Makhateli danced leading roles in ballets such as La Bayadére, Cinderella, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, Romeo & Juliet, Manon, Onegin, Symphonic Variations , and both the Makarova and Mason productions of The Sleeping Beauty , together with works by George Balanchine and many other one-act ballets.

David Makhateli was coached by Alexander Agadzhanov throughout his career at The Royal Ballet and his partners during the past 8 years have included: Darcey Bussell, Tamara Rojo, Alina Cojocaru, Marianela Nuñez, Sarah Lamb, Zenaida Yanovsky, Miyako Yoshida, Jaimie Tapper, Mara Galeazzi, Roberta Marquez, Lauren Cuthbertson, Alexandra Ansanelli and Leanne Benjamin .
