Last Saturday, while dancing Kitri in Don Quixote, Natalia Osipova slipped and fell, and was in the second half replaced by first soloist Akane Takada. The Guardian’s Luke Jennings examines the often brutal demands of ballet, and other famous ballerinas whose falls have enabled others to rise.
