Anthony Bowne takes up the position of Director of Laban on 1 Sept. following the retirement of Dr Marion North who led Laban for 30 years.

Anthony has held the position of Deputy Chief Executive at Laban since 1994 and was instrumental in the development of the organisation in that time, particularly in realising Laban’s new building on Deptford Creekside which opened in February 2003. Designed by the award-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Laban building has been nominated for numerous architecture awards including the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award. He has held senior academic positions at both Laban and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His experience in education is balanced with creative expertise as an internationally renowned, award-winning lighting designer for artists practicing in the UK, Hong Kong and Taiwan; and as Executive Director of Transitions Dance Company.

As he took up his new post Anthony Bowne said: “Laban has reached an exciting time in its history, under Dr North’s leadership we have become one of Europe’s leading institutions for contemporary dance artist training with unrivalled facilities and expertise. I am delighted to lead Laban into a very exciting future – we start the new academic year with funding from HEFCE and we are building relationships with our partners in the region, most notably with our colleagues Trinity College of Music. I relish the opportunity to meet the challenges before us and to strengthen Laban’s position at the centre of contemporary culture”
