News: Kylie to work with Place Prize winner

Monday 18 October 2004

Rambert Dance Company’s Associate Choreographer Rafael Bonachela will be working again with Kylie Minogue later this month. The pop diva has commissioned him to choreograph the video for her new single, I Believe in You – which she co-wrote with Jake Shears and Babydaddy from The Scissor Sisters. The single will be released on December 6.

Rafael has worked with Kylie Minogue on a number of previous occasions, choreographing her routine at the 2002 Brit Awards, her Fever Tour in 2002 and collaborating with Ms Minogue and her creative team on a special multi-media work entitled 21, which appeared in Rambert’s repertoire during 2003.

Bonachela’s work first caught the eye of William Baker, Kylie’s Creative Director, during a performance of his work, Linear Remains, when it opened at Sadler’s Wells in November 2001. Linear Remains now features in Rambert’s tour repertoire, appearing at a number of venues across the country during autumn 2004 ( – although not in the Sadler’s Wells programme next month).

Rafael joined Rambert Dance Company as a dancer in 1992 and was appointed Associate Choreographer in 2003. His progression through Rambert is an example of the high value that the Company places on the development of British-based choreographers, particularly from within the company’s own ranks. His skill as a choreographer was recently affirmed through his success in the “2004 Place Prize for Dance”: – a new initiative encouraging British-based choreographers to generate ideas for short new dance works.
