News: Jonathan Burrows award

Monday 17 February 2003

Jonathan Burrows
has been awarded $20,000 by the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, New York in recognition for his ongoing contributions to contemporary dance.

Established by John Cage and Jasper Johns in 1963, the Foundation each year invites distinguished artists and arts professionals to propose exceptional individuals and performing groups whom they feel deserve an unrestricted award in support of their work.

Jonathan Burrows started his career as a soloist with the Royal Ballet in London and went on to form the Jonathan Burrows Group in 1988 as a platform to present his own productions.
His work has since taken him around the world, regularly showcasing his ground-breaking compositions to audiences around Europe and North and South America. Most renowned of the Group’s works include ‘The Stop Quartet’ in 1996 and ‘Things I Don’t Know’ in 1997 (part of which, a duet with Lynne Bristow entitled ‘Singing’ will be performed again at the Bonnie Bird Theatre, Laban this week 19-20 February) which helped to raise their profile as one of Europe’s leading dance ensembles. Other high profile collaborators include Sylvie Guillem’s performance of his film work ‘Blue Yellow’ and his invitation in 1997 to choreograph for William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt. The FCPA award will afford Jonathan the opportunity to work with a larger group of dancers – something he hasn’t done in over three years.

In 2001 ‘Weak Dance Strong Questions’, a joint project with Dutch theatre director Jan Ritsema, brought Jonathan further praise. It was taken as far as Brazil after a hugely successful circuit of Europe. In 2002 Jonathan premiered ‘Both Sitting Duet’, a highly acclaimed collaboration with Matteo Fargion, performed in Brussels and Frankfurt. This year, the production will continue touring internationally.
‘For those who are genuinely interested in contemporary dance, this is definitely today’s curriculum performance’ on ‘Weak Dance Strong Questions’, Bergensavisen, Norway
