John Ashford awarded CBE
THE PLACE’S THEATRE DIRECTOR IS RECOGNISED IN THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS
The Place is delighted that John Ashford, its theatre director, has been awarded a CBE for services to dance in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, which was announced on Saturday.
John Ashford has been Theatre Director at The Place since 1987, producing contemporary dance programmes for the Robin Howard Dance Theatre, which he has made Britain’s busiest dance venue. His pioneering work in promoting young British dance artists and championing innovative overseas companies has gained The Place an international reputation for eclectic excellence.
Ian Fisher, Chairman of The Place’s Board of Governors, said today:
“A large part of The Place’s current identity has been shaped by John Ashford. This in turn has helped to form an entire generation of dance artists and audiences, who I’m sure would join me in welcoming this award.”
Contemporary Dance has been further recognised in the Birthday Honours list with the award of an MBE to Lea Anderson, artistic director of The Cholmondeleys, which was, along with DV8, the first company invited by John Ashford to be resident at The Place.
