National Theatre - 'wonder.land'

Venezuelan born, London based choreographer Javier De Frutos is busy reworking the movement for Damon Albarn’s version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which opened at Manchester International Festival earlier this year – and is currently previewing at the National Theatre (press night is 10th December).

He talks to the Evening Standard’s Lyndsey Winship about the changes to the production:
“Damon has come back and he has delivered something even bigger, but something that also sounds way more like him,” says De Frutos. “Damon is hugely distinctive and hugely musical. It is a Damon Albarn musical, so it should sound like one.”

-and about the craft of working on a West End musical, in contrast to making his own work: “With my personal stuff, because it’s crash and burn, I’m happy to go to hell and back and do everything that is possible,” he says, “because it is an act of exorcism.”
