News: Hip hop happy

Tuesday 21 July 2009

Both the Barbican and the Southbank Centre are presenting hip hop shows with proven audience pulling power this Christmas.

Boy Blue return to the Barbican Theatre on 11 December for a four week run of their Olivier Award winning Pied Piper, with choreography by Kenrick Sandy, music by Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante and direction and design by Ultz. The show was originally produced by Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2006. It follows the structure of Robert Browning’s poem about the Pied Piper, but in this modern day setting, the rats become ASBO’d hooded youth.

Into the Hoods, Kate Prince and Zoonation’s loveable version of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical Into the Woods takes over the Queen Elizabeth Hall from 16 Dec – 10 January. The production was the first street dance show to have an extended run in the West End last year. *Into the Hoods* tells the story of two runaway kids and their adventures in the Ruff Endz estate. With characters like singer Lil Red, two-timing rapper Prince, Rap-en-Zel and gold trainer-wearing Spinderella, Into the Hoods found an appreciative and wide ranging audience.

ZooNation will be running a programme of free events and workshops for young people alongside the show and in the run up to the Into the Hoods season, Director Kate Prince will be working closely with Southbank Centre, beginning with Dance Mob, a 1-minute dance routine choreographed by Kate, which will be learnt in advance and will be performed by hundreds of members of the public in the outdoors spaces around the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 30th August. She said “The atmosphere at Southbank Centre is simply awesome. I’ve wanted ZooNation to perform at Southbank Centre for sometime and I’m delighted to be working with them on both Dance Mob and Into The Hoods”.
