News: Gormley

Friday 30 April 2004

Turner Prize winner Antony Gormley, whose most famous work is probably the huge Angel of the North, has donated Territory (1995), an original work on paper, to be auctioned by Dance Umbrella. The auction aims to raise funds to commission work by New York’s Merce Cunningham, acclaimed as “the world’s greatest living choreographer” by The Wall Street Journal.

During November 2003, in a unique commission and as a part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations, Dance Umbrella presented living legend and major innovator of modern dance Merce Cunningham in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern for a sold-out, special week of Anniversary Events. This outstanding dance season highlighted the strong affinity that contemporary dance has with the world of contemporary art. Antony Gormley is a long term supporter of Dance Umbrella and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in particular.

Proceeds from the sale of Territory, by auction, will be used by Dance Umbrella to commission further work from the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Val Bourne, Artistic Director of Dance Umbrella said “We are immensely grateful to Antony Gormley for his generosity and hope that the public will help us by bidding for this outstanding work”.

The auction will be conducted via the Dance Umbrella website commencing on 26 April and closing on 30 June 2004
