News: Freddie Opoku-Addaie

Tuesday 28 April 2009

Choreographer Freddie Opoku-Addaie is the winner of this year’s Robin Howard Foundation Commission.

Since 2003 the Foundation has funded a single, annual commission of a new work to be staged at The Place and Opoku-Addaie’s new work, *Mis-Thread*, is part of the Springloaded season, from 7 – 9 May 09. It will be part of a mixed bill with earlier works by Opoku-Addaie, including *Silence Speaks Volumes* which made the Place Prize finals in 2006 and also won first prize at the VI Certamen International de Coreografia Burgos-New York.

Freddie was born in East London and partly raised in Ghana. He graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2002 and choreographed his first work as part of Random Dance’s AWOL, seen at The Place in 2004. His work has also been performed at ROH’s Summer Collection, Stratford Circus and Resolution! at The Place. As a performer he has worked with Candoco, Random Dance, Jonzi D, Saburo Teshigawara, East London Dance, Rashpal Singh Bansal and Saju Hari. Freddie was recently appointed an Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House for 2009-2011 and his work will be seen there this year as part of Summer Collection: New Lines in Dance.

*Mis-Thread* features live music by German composer Friedemann Dähn and singer/composer Sarah Shanson and is a contemporary soundscape layered with songs drawn from the folk traditions of several countries. Sculptures by artist Friedel Buecking will be incorporated into the piece and Sophie Etterli, who has worked with Vivienne Westwood, has designed the costumes.

Set in Stone? Was originally commissioned for the Youth Dance England Festival 2008 and will be re-created and performed in this bill by members of East London Dance Youth Company and Shift, The Place’s youth dance company.

The first performance on Thursday 7 May is a preview in aid of The Place’s new Pioneering Fund, which has been set up to support the creation of new work from the next generation of dancers and dancemakers.
