News: ENB's new generation of dancers

Wednesday 4 August 2010

As the English National Ballet prepares to celebrate its 60th birthday this summer (Saturday 14 August is the Company’s official birthday), Artistic Director, Wayne Eagling, explains why he’s excited about the future of the company.

Eagling enthuses about the talent of rising star 20-year-old Vadim Muntagirov,

“‘He’s got everything – he can jump like that,’ enthuses Eagling, spreading his arms wide. ‘But I did say to him that he had to learn his stagecraft. So he can be playing Albrecht [the male lead in Giselle] one night and go back to being a peasant the next.’ Eagling laughs when I suggest that’s a sure way of nipping any incipient diva tendencies in the bud. ‘Absolutely.’”

Keith Watson highlights other exciting young dancers in ENB’s ranks,

ENB currently boasts a budding roster that’s the envy of its peers. As well as Muntagirov, there are two more 20-year-old boy wonders in Spain’s Esteban Berlanga and Junor de Oliveira Souza from Brazil, while home-grown ballerina Laurretta Summerscales stole headlines when, at 18, she was called up in January to take the challenging role of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis in Giselle.”
