News: Emmy Award for Balletboyz

Tuesday 25 November 2008

Balletboyz Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt received an Emmy Award last night for their documentary Strictly Bolshoi – which followed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon as he became the first British choreographer to make a work on the Bolshoi Ballet.

Strictly Bolshoi won the Arts Programme category of the influential awards, which are made by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in New York. Michael and Billy were at the ceremony to pick up the award and said: “We are delighted to win this prestigious award. It was a fantastic night, not just for us but for British television, and we feel truly honored.

Of course without the faith that Commissioning Editor Jan Younghusband and Channel 4 placed in us (and continue to place in us) films like Strictly Bolshoi would not ever make it to our screens.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our collaborators, Director Oliver Manzi, Composer Ezio Bosso, the second male lead Christopher Wheeldon and the Bolshoi Ballet. Deep gratitude to our colleagues at Ballet Boyz Productions”.

The documentary was made for Channel 4 and achieved record audiences when it was screened on Christmas Day in 2007. Nunn and Trevitt were given unprecedented behind the scenes access to follow Christopher Wheeldon through the process of making a new work on Bolshoi dancers. The fascinating insight it gives into the workings of one of the greatest ballet companies in the world takes takes a whole new turn when Trevitt and Nunn – who are long term friends and colleagues of Wheeldon – put down the camera to help him interpret his ideas for the Russian dancers.

The UK won seven out of the ten Emmy Awards this year. Other recipients include The BBC’s Life on Mars drama series, David Suchet for his role as Robert Maxwell in a BBC production and Aardman Animations for Shaun the Sheep.

Strictly Bolshoi also won a Rose d’Or for best Arts Documentary earlier this year. It will be shown again on Channel 4 over the Christmas period. The date and time are still to be confirmed – we will include them in the TV listings nearer the time.
