News: DV8 cancel opening of new show

Monday 9 May 2005

DV8 Physical Theatre had to cancel the UK premiere of Just for Show at Brighton Festival due to the serious illness of one of the company’s dancers, Mikel Aristegui.

Just for Show was one of the opening performances for the Brighton Festival and the entire run at the Corn Exchange had sold out. Nick Dodds, Chief Executive of Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival said: “we recognise that the company have done everything that they could to make the performances possible and share their sense of regret for audiences and performers alike. Discussions are taking place to try to reschedule a visit to Brighton Dome later in the year. A full refund is being given to all ticket holders.”

It is anticipated that by the next scheduled performances in Britain (Warwick Arts Centre/26-28th M*ay and *The Lowry, Manchester June 9 -11th), Mr Aristegui, who has Cellulitis, will have recovered to allow the tour to go ahead as planned.

In eighteen years of international touring, DV8 have only ever cancelled two performances. A company spokesperson said “During rehearsals for this production DV8 conducted international auditions in London and Amsterdam to find potential understudies for its principal performers in case of injury. Due to the highly personalised nature of DV8’s current work – the fact that the show’s movement material is tailored specifically to each performer – meant that many roles are extremely difficult to cover, including that of Mr Aristegui.”

Just for Show comes to the National Theatre (Lyttelton) from 10 – 19 November
