Imperial Ice Stars - 'The Nutcracker on Ice'

It’s quite a stretch from the Imperial Ice stars Nutcracker at the Royal Albert Hall to Canadian collective Le Patin Libre’s Vertical at Somerset House. Lyndsey Winship looks at developments in ice dance..

Tony Mercer, producer of The Nutcracker on Ice, at the Royal Albert Hall (until 2 January) thinks it’s a great medium. “It’s got grace, it’s got speed, it’s got beauty. It can make you smile, it can make you cry; it’s all-round entertainment.”

The members of the Canadian collective Le Patin Libre are all ex-professional figure skaters who wanted to explore the creative possibilities offered by ice. Their commission for Dance Umbrella 2014 is nominated for a National Dance Award – and they were winners of a Total Theatre Award at this year’s Edinburgh Festival. You can see an edited version of their Vertical Influences at Somerset House next month (12 – 16 January)

“It’s quite easy to have a good, lucrative career as a pro figure skater, and coaching is even better…so it really takes obsessed weirdos to sacrifice that for hours in the fridge studying new ways to glide,” says collective member Alexandre Hamel.
