News: Dance UK's Choreographers Observerships

L-R: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Aszure Barton and Yabin Wang

Dance UK is now taking applications for the 2016 Choreographers Observerships Programme.

The Choreographers Observerships were created to respond to demand from choreographers for opportunities to watch other artists at work, either as a way to open up new areas of work, (for example in commercials, theatre or opera), or to explore another artist’s creative practice.

The programme is funded by Arts Council England and Dance UK. It offers ten choreographers funded awards to observe a choreographer of their choice at work, over two sessions, between November 2015 and April 2016. The choreographer being observed receives a small fee of £300 for their time.

This year, Dance UK is partnering with English National Ballet to provide three observership places for three female dance makers at any stage of their careers. English National Ballet will offer those selected for an observership, access to world-class choreographers Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Aszure Barton, and Yabin Wang, who are each creating new work for She Said, English National Ballet’s new programme dedicated to female choreography. Observers will have the opportunity to witness the creation process of these new works between 22 – 27 February and 28 March – 2 April 2016 and see She Said when it premieres at Sadler’s Wells from the 13 – 16 April 2016.

Examples of choreographers who took part in this programme in 2013/14 include: Diane Alison-Mitchell, Movement Director and Choreographer, who observed Liam Steel, Director, Movement Director and Choreographer; Hubert Essakow, freelance Choreographer, observed Javier de Frutos, and Kanchan Maradan, Kathak performer, teacher and choreographer based in Manchester, who observed Akram Khan.
