Friday 21 January 2005

Dick Matchett, freelance arts consultant, was presented with the Dance UK Industry Award by Ian Bramley, Dance UK Director, at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards on 20 January 2005 at the Royal Opera House.

Dick Matchett’s long and notable career in dance includes roles at London Contemporary Dance Theatre, London Festival Ballet, the Arts Council of England, and the South Bank Centre. The award honours Dick’s unflagging commitment to dance expressed through his extensive support of emerging dance artists and professionals, with whom he generously shares his considerable knowledge and experience, and through the time that he has given and continues to give to many organisations as a board member.

Ian Bramley, who chaired the panel of judges, said: ‘Dick is truly astounding in his commitment to ensuring the future of dance through his support and mentoring of those working in dance and his constant delight in new work and new artists. I can’t think of a more worthy recipient.’

Dance UK established the Industry Award in 2003 to highlight the many important and unacknowledged contributions that make a real impact on how dance is created, supported and seen. It was set up to honour an individual working in dance who has made an outstanding contribution to the art form and who, through his or her knowledge, skill and generosity, has had a significant effect on dance. Nominations for the award came from across a wide range of professions within dance – from artistic directors to dance managers to those working in dance education.
