News: Dance to Help Haiti

Thursday 21 January 2010

Some of the finest UK street dance artists working in London have got together to organise a day of workshops in aid of the Haiti earthquake appeal this Sunday 24 January at Sadler’s Wells. For a minimum donation of £5 per workshop (you can give more!) you can take an hours class with Zoonation’s Kate Prince, Boy Blue’s Kenrick Sandy or Impact Dance’s Hakeem Onibudo – amongst many others.

Hakeem explains how the day has come about:

\“I was sitting at Euston Station on Friday 15 January eating a sandwich and drinking a cup of tea, on my way to Daventry to teach at at a dance weekender, when I casually looked to my right. It seemed my world came to a standstill as I caught a glimpse of the man’s newspaper next to me. Photos of tragedy, despair and sadness, as the full extent of the Haiti nightmare hit me. I felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness and before I knew it was dialling the phone number of my good friend and dance associate Kate Prince, artistic director of Zoonation.

Four hours later, Zoonation company manager Chantal Spiteri, Kate and I had pulled together our line-up of teachers and also received the full backing of Sadler’s Wells. Dance to Help Haiti was a reality!

*Bringing the hip hop community together so quickly shows the power and strength of our industry. We hope to raise as much money as possible for the victims of this awful tragedy. We are very excited about the day but also very aware that although here in London it will be a celebration of dance and the coming together of our dance community, we must not forget the pain and suffering of the people of Haiti.\”*

Places on each workshop will be limited and participants need to arrive at Sadler’s Wells stage door at least least half at hour before each session to register. To allow as many people as possible to take part, sessions will be limited to two per person.
