News: Dance on ice at Somerset House

Thursday 11 November 2010

This year Big Dance and English National Ballet are adding extra sparkle to the courtyard of Somerset House when it is once again transformed into a magical open air ice rink. Skate at Somerset House runs from Tuesday 23 November 2010 until 23 January 2011.

In the run up to Christmas, you can skate to the perennial favourite ballet music, Tchaikovsky’s *The Nutcracker*, (with the chance to win tickets to see English National Ballet’s sparkling new production of The Nutcracker at the London Coliseum) on Tuesdays 23, 30 November and 7 December in The Nutcracker Hour, between 3 & 4pm.

After the festive excess, join the Big Ice Dance Lunchtime Workouts, which include a 15-minute dance warm-up session with members of English National Ballet before gliding on to the ice to practice dance skills with Somerset House’s expert Ice Dance coaches. (Monday to Friday 10-21 January 12.30 -1.30pm)

Big Dance also present a whole day of Ice Dance on Thursday 13 January led by Karen Barber, one of Britain’s leading ice dancers and teachers, currently working with Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean on their TV series, Dancing on Ice.

Other season highlights include DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays in December, organised by London’s top promoters, Ministry of Sound and Eat Your Own Ears and Time Out’s Club critic and Somerset House Skate School offering a range of classes for all ages and abilities in group and individual sessions.

Breakfast with Tiffany (Tiffany & Co are partners of Skate at Somerset House) offers champagne and hot chocolate to enliven the experience of early morning skating on Saturday mornings before Christmas, with the specially 40ft high specially decorated Tiffany Tree adding to the festive atmosphere.
