Cultural Revelation is a pan-London weekend event organised by the GLA, to coincide with London Open House weekend.

17 & 18 September

All events are aimed at giving people an insight into the working life of the theatre and bookable via

Rambert Dance Company, Sadler’s Wells & The Place are all taking part.

Billy Elliot – Talk

Rambert Dance Company: Open rehearsal and venue tour

Established in 1926, Rambert Dance Company is the oldest dance company in Britain and employs more artists than any other contemporary dance company in Britain. It tours nationally and internationally and works with some of the leading and most exciting dance choreographers. The Cultural Revelation offers the chance to see Rambert Dance Company at their Chiswick home, watch the dancers in rehearsal for their upcoming tour, and discover the history of this unique company.

Sadler’s Wells – Behind the scenes tours

Sadler’s Wells is throwing open its doors for exciting behind the scenes tours and workshops.
Sadler’s Wells Theatre is uniquely dedicated to bringing the very best international and UK dance to London audiences. Redeveloped in 1998, the theatre breaks new ground in theatre design with stylish, accessible front-of-house areas, flexible auditorium and purpose-built lecture theatre, studios and entertaining spaces. But behind the stylish glass, brick, wood and steel is a 250 year history with six previous theatres occupying the Islington site since 1683 and a fully operating well.

Mini-backstage tour & family dance workshop: 10:00 – 11:30

Go behind the scenes at Sadler’s Wells with a backstage tour and fun creative dance workshop for all the family. No dance experience, no problem – just bring some energy, enthusiasm and wear loose comfortable clothing! Recommended for age 6 and over. Each family must have at least one adult participate in the workshop.

Mini-backstage tour & ‘Give it a Go’ dance class: 12:00 – 13:30
Capacity: 25
A chance to visit behind the scenes at Sadler’s Wells combined with a fun and energetic dance class. It’s never too late to start dancing – so don’t worry if you have no dance experience. Please wear loose comfortable clothing. Minimum age: 16 years.

Backstage Insight Events: 14:00 & 16:00
Length: 1hr 15 mins
Capacity: 35 per event
Get an insight into life behind the scenes at this busy working theatre. Meet the architects who designed the theatre, take a backstage tour with the technical staff and view on-stage preparations for a show. Those with a head for heights can inspect the stage rigging from the fly floor (three storeys above the stage), as well as exploring dressing rooms, rehearsal studios, kitchens and function rooms.

The tour route is fully accessible to wheelchair users, however it is advisable to notify us of any specific access requirements when booking.

The Place – Free dance classes

As part of the Cultural Revelation, try a free beginners contemporary dance class at The Place. With top quality teachers, state-of-the-art studios and live musical accompaniment, The Place’s popular open access classes give you the chance to learn contemporary technique, keep fit and have fun at London’s world renowned centre of excellence for contemporary dance.
