Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg have announced they will leave The Royal Ballet at the end of the 2012/13 season to pursue other artistic challenges – which means their last performance together in London as members of The Royal Ballet will be in Mayerling at the Royal Opera House this Wednesday, 5 June.

Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg joined The Royal Ballet in 1999. They will both continue dancing and will shortly announce their future plans. Today they said: “We have had wonderful experiences with The Royal Ballet over the years and feel fortunate to have worked alongside so many inspiring artists. We wish Kevin O’Hare and The Royal Ballet’s dancers and staff all the best for the future and would like to thank our loyal and supporting audience for sharing many magical moments with us.”

The Royal Ballet’s Director Kevin O’Hare said: “Alina and Johan have given many memorable performances as members of The Royal Ballet both at the Royal Opera House and around the world. Over the past ten years I have greatly enjoyed watching their unique partnership develop, as I know our audiences have, and I wish them every success in the next phase of their careers.”

They will dance for the last time with the Royal Ballet on their tour of Japan, on 10 and 12 July in Tokyo.

Judith Mackrell in the Guardian asks whether it was lack of opportunities within the Royal Ballet that has prompted them to leave. She also questions how the Company will fill the gaps left by the departure of Cojocaru, Kobborg, Tamara Rojo, Sergei Polunin, Leanne Benjamin and Mara Galeazzi:
“The Royal haven’t ignored Kobborg’s skills, commissioning his perfectly pitched production of August Bournonville’s La Sylphide back in 2006. But the opportunities for him to create new work for the company are very limited.”

“Separately and apart, these two extraordinary dancers have lit up the stage of the Royal Opera House ever since they joined the Royal Ballet in 1999.”
