News: Cloud Gate lose base in fire

Monday 14 April 2008

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan arrive at Sadler’s Wells in London with their beautiful production Moon Water, despite a fire which devastated their headquarters in February this year – and in which the costumes for the production were destroyed.

The company have embraced the challenge with typical calm fortitude. “The fire was a test from Buddha,” said Lin Hwai-min, the founder and artistic director of both Cloud Gate and Cloud Gate 2. “Buddha must think that Cloud Gate is still very young at 35 and can tackle a new challenge. And, we are ready for it.”

The Taiwan government and various cultural institutions immediately gave their support and found Cloud Gate a temporary studio -and amazingly they started classes and rehearsals the day after the fire.

Ironically Moon Water involves the whole stage being flooded with water.
