News: Carlos Acosta to retire from classical ballet

Carlos Acosta has confirmed that his career in classical ballet is nearing the end – but also that he is likely to continue dancing in contemporary works.
He was speaking on stage at the Hay on Wye Festival last weekend, in an interview with Telegraph arts editor-in-chief Sarah Crompton.

“Two more years in classical… [the] next two seasons will be the final seasons.. I will make a creation with the Royal Ballet, Carmen, and that will be my swan song.
“Then I probably will carry on doing some contemporary works. And then maybe I will employ a choreographer to choreography me sitting down. “I have been grieving for a long time, but I think it’s time. It’s not fair on the audiences. And the routine, the classes … the pain.”
