News: CandoCo seek new Artistic Director.

Wednesday 8 November 2006

The search is on for a successor to CandoCo’s founding Director Celeste Dandeker who has announced she will retire in 2007 – and this time she really will be going.

Two years ago the company tried to recruit a successor – but didn’t find a suitable candidate. They did create a new post though and Lauren Scholey joined the company as Executive Director.

Of course it could look like a daunting task. In her sixteen years at the helm of CandoCo, Celeste has established a world renowned company of disabled and non-disabled performers, with an admirable repertoire and a formidable reputation.

Very few contemporary dance companies in the UK pass on the role of Artistic Director beyond its founding Artistic Director. Traditionally most contemporary dance companies revolve around the artistic vision of their founding director-:mailto:Lauren%20Scholey,- who is usually their sole choreographer. But as a repertory company, with a track record in commissioning new work, Candoco will not have to focus solely on choreography.

Lauren Scholey says the company is excited about the possibilities. The ideal person might be someone who woudn’t necessarily consider themselves suitable for the role. They need to have a strong track record maybe as a dancer, producer, director of a dance development agency, or choreographer – crucially they need to have the appetite for a new challenge and the ability to transfer their skills.

The company has designed a flexible application and interview process that will allow all applicants to demonstrate their particular skills and experience and outline how they would develop the role of Artistic Director at CandoCo. Darshan Singh Bhuller, until recently Artistic Director of Phoenix, who was involved in appointing his successor Javier de Frutos, is assisting the Candoco board in the selection and shortlisting process.

Lauren Scholey is happy to have an informal chat with anyone interested in finding out more about this rare opportunity to take on an artistic leadership role. Contact her on 0207 704 6845.

The deadline for applications is Monday 29 November.
